Dental crowns

Dental crowns

A dental crown is like a cap for your tooth. When your tooth is damaged or has severe decay, a dental crown is used to cover and protect it. It is placed over your own tooth, giving it a new, healthy surface. This not only restores the function of the tooth, but also gives it an aesthetic appearance.

Dental crowns can be classified into several main types depending on the material they are made of as well as their function. Here are some of the main types:

  1. Metal crowns: These are made from metal alloys, such as gold or a platinum-nickel alloy. They are extremely strong, but not as aesthetically pleasing as other types of crowns.
  2. Ceramic crowns: These crowns are made from a ceramic material that is very similar to the natural color of the teeth. They are more aesthetic than metal crowns and are mainly used for visible front teeth.
  3. Zirconium crowns: These are made from zirconium oxide, which is an extremely strong and aesthetic material. Zirconium crowns are suitable for both front and back teeth.
  4. Plastic crowns: These crowns are made of plastic and are used temporarily while a permanent crown is made or to temporarily cover a damaged tooth.
  5. Composite crowns: These are crowns that combine different materials, such as metal and ceramic, to combine strength and aesthetics.
